• Intel Gives More Details Six-Core Gulftown CPUs

In a press conference yesterday Intel offered a few more tidbits of information on the six-core Gulftown chips it plans to launch later this year.

Scheduled for release sometime in the first half of this year, Gulftown is aimed at high-end desktops and workstations. Intel yesterday offered some juicy deets on the Westmere chip, including that 1.17 billion transistors onto 240mm sq. die and carries 12MB in L3 and a thermal design power of 130W at 3.33GHz. But the part we’re most excited about is improvements in power efficiency.

  • Intel Announces Core i5, Core i7 With vPro

Businesses now have special Westmere parts made just for them.

Businesses looking to upgrade to the latest 32nm Intel CPU technology will be pleased to know that Intel today rolled out its fourth generation of vPro-enabled Core i5 and Core i7 chips.

Key features of vPro include Intel Anti-Theft Technology, which frustrates thieves by locking access to a PC if a central server or built-in intelligence concludes it is lost or stolen. New Intel Anti-Theft Technology version 2.0 enables encryption solutions to disable access to cryptographic keys through hardware to completely block access to data, and also makes it simpler to reactivate a PC once in rightful hands. Also, a custom message can be displayed in a pre-OS screen of the disabled PC for anyone who tries to access the computer.

  • Dell’s Mini 5 Tablet Uses 1GHz Snapdragon CPU

Dell’s Mini 5 uses the Arm-based Snapdragon CPU — the same CPU powering Google’s Nexus One phone.

Earlier this month, Dell revealed its rather small tablet-like device called the Mini 5. As Electronista points out, it’s a step up from the previously-announced Mini 3 mobile phone, sporting a 5-inch screen and multi-touch functions. Unfortunately, Dell didn’t provide any real specs on the upcoming device outside varying colors (pink, black, red). However, the curious Tinhte.com took the device apart to see what’s really under the hood.

  • Intel’s 40GB Value SSD Selling at $129.99

You fancy one of those ultra cool and fast SSD inside your laptop but the price is just too high, well Intel plan to save the day with a 40GIG value SSD for $129.99 – Bargain right?

Tech Report today points out that the 40GB Intel X25-V is now selling on Newegg for $129.99. It’s not as fast as the top-end drives, and according to Intel’s spec sheet, it can do sequential reads of up to 170MB/s and writes at up to 35MB/s.

For a little more than double the cost, you’ll get twice the capacity and much better performance with the 80GB X25-M sequential read and write speeds of 250MB/s and 70MB/s, respectively at the Newegg listing of $299.99.

  • Intel unveils next generation Atom platform

Intel’s Atom processor has been pretty successful so far to say the least, and the current worldwide leader in processors are certainly not going to rest on their laurels – hence coming up with a next generation Intel Atom platform. This will be the first Intel processors that see the integration of graphics as well as a memory controller in the CPU, which in turn results in power reduction, smaller systems and performance jumps. This higher level of integration alongside the inclusion of 45nm manufacturing will see the average power consumption go down to 20% over the previous generation, which will certainly carve a smile on netbook manufacturers’ faces as their products will experience a longer battery life.We can expect to see major OEMs roll out netbooks with the new Intel Atom processors within the next few weeks, so those who want to own a new netbook might want to hold off their purchases for a while more if the situation has yet to reach the urgent and critical level, as chugging along to a new processor is always much better compared to running on something older. The latest Intel Atom platform for netbooks will comprise of a new Intel Atom processor known as the N450, alongside a new low-power Intel NM10 Express Chipset. For those who are looking at entry level desktop PCs, you can choose from the Intel Atom processor D410 or the dual core D510, where it will also be paired with the Intel NM10 Express Chipset. What’s the big deal about these new Atom processors, you ask? Well, one of the most significant features would be the integration of memory controller and graphics into the CPU, making it a first in the industry on x-86 chips. This results in significant cost reductions, a smaller average footprint and being more power efficient to keep in line with the green theme. We can’t wait to see what kind of desktops that will be released with this new processor, especially their design and how they would fit into everyday life.
